Goodbye Drexel Shaft

I am a proud graduate of Drexel University (Class of 2002). For those who have been students of the fine institution surely know a particular eye-sore in the university skyline affectionately dubbed "The Drexel Shaft". See picture (taken from my own collection):

The shaft was a physical representation (in ugliness) of the administrative nightmare that many students had to deal with - specifically when it came to their financial aide packages, add/drop classes or the computer systems for the co-op process. The first three years of my college career were a nightmare because of these issues. I can say with a degree of certainty that there was a minor improvement by the time I had graduated and can only assume there has been continued improvement.

Drexel has certainly done a great deal to improve the look of the campus and to increase enrollment. To that point, the University has finally managed to do away with the physical symbol of the student's dissatisfaction:

Surprisingly, this demolition was not only covered by local news outlets such as Philebrity, but also on a global nerd blog Boing Boing.
